Our Story
The history of Al Pompiere is part of Rome's history, beginning back in 1928 as a humble wine bar serving wine and supplì. It's a story of passion and dedication that, thanks to the Monteferri family, has transformed humble Roman fare into an elegant dining experience that stays true to its roots.
"JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY!
WHY IS IT CALLED AL POMPIERE?"
Back in the nostalgic year of 1928, the Monteferri family, originally from Velletri and long established in the wine trade, moved from the Castelli Romani to Rome to begin a new chapter. Their adventure began in the heart of the capital, in Piazza Tartaruga, now known as "Piazza Mattei". They took over the Pompiere tavern, run by a retired firefighter who kept busy managing a wine bar—a welcoming stop for anyone looking to enjoy a glass of wine or share a friendly meal.
The family continued serving wine, pairing every toast with a delicious supplì, and later added carciofi alla giudia, fried salt cod fillets, unbeatable penne all'arrabbiata, and their signature pollo alla diavola, which explains the name: people used to say the firefighters had to be called to put out the fire in your throat.
